About Us
The Story
Five years ago we became the owners of five acres located on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario, Canada. With retirement approaching we had been searching for property in Canada, preferably Ontario, where we could grow a garden, raise some livestock and become more self-sufficient. We purchased our property due to its location, growing zone 6a and close to family, and not because of the soil, which tends to become soggy, or the house, which was a ruin.
While in pursuit of self sufficiency we have been building our soil using regenerative farming practices in our gardens and pastures. We've planted an orchard following permaculture guidelines. Our laying hens and meat chickens are free range. We've expanded our efforts to preserve the food we grow by canning, freezing and dehydrating. Avoiding non-organic chemicals is mandatory here on our small holding and we continue to reduce the waste we produce and our carbon footprint. All this while restoring our 140ish year old Ontario Farmhouse that we lovingly refer to as "The Hovel."
